Though rainy weather hampered the third annual Black Gold Festival in Hazard, an enthusiastic crowd clad in rain garb lined Main Street, the parking structure and Daniel Field to enjoy the celebration.  The 1979 event included the annual parade that featured bands from East Kentucky and Virginia.  Judges, huddled under umbrellas on a flat bed truck in front of the Perry County Court House, rated the bands as they marched by.  Despite the rain, Hazard High School band director John Bastoila, who organized the band competition, said the turn out was as good as the previous Black Gold Festival.

Twenty craftsman displayed their arts and crafts in front of Main Street businesses and at the parking structure.  Oil paintings, dried flower arrangements, wood carvings, patchwork, crocheted pillows, colorful quilts, furniture and imaginative Christmas decorations were displayed.

Many people were disappointed when the "live music" which had been at the Amphitheater in the past, had to be moved to the Roy G. Eversole cafeteria because of the rain. The bands that performed included The Bluegrass Travelers, Sons of the Bluegrass, the Lost Creek Boys and Candy Apple.  The event was hosted by Sterling Akers.

A pig roast was served by the Hazard - Perry County Jaycees, while fish was provided by the Perry County Fish and Game Club at Riverside Park.

The 1979 festival also featured the Black Gold 5 Mile Run, a tennis tournament, and a Black Gold bakeoff.  A disco dance was planned but canceled when the scheduled musical group was reluctant to travel from Bowling Green to Hazard due to flash flood warnings that had been issued.  Click here to view the 1979 Black Gold Parade.
