Listen to a WSGS Tribute to Jim
Rose
We were all very proud to share space with Jim Rose at Hazard High School. He brought such anticipation and excitement to our high school games and he could get an entire gym (both sides) standing on their feet. As a classmate, he was a very nice young man, always polite, always unassuming. For these attributes, he will be long remembered. My sympathies go out to you Sharon, your family and all of Jim's loved ones. Ernestine Brashear Cornett, Hazard, KY The sports world and our world was a better
place because of Jim Rose. The closest a high school basketball team
will ever come to pro level was those Hazard High years with Rose. The
Hazard High game at Memorial Gym with Rose versus Jim McDaniels is the
most memorable to me. Five star quality. Supernova. V.
Martin Ogrosky, Charlotte, NC I express my deepest sympathy to Shellie, Lovette, and Jim's love ones. I will always remember their hospitality during the many occasions and nights I spent at their home after college, and when I would return from Atlanta. May God Bless You. Della Little, Stone Mountain, GA I remember Jim when he was a kid playing ball at the cracker box gym at the old high school developing his famous jump shot, what a talent he became and I followed his career through college. I often thought of him through the years and then the sad news of his passing. My heart goes out to his family. God bless you all. Billy B. Caudill, Ft. Lauderdale, FL My brother, my hero, my friend. Everyone knows you as a great basketball player but not many people know you were a great football and baseball player also. But as big a star as you were, it never went to your head. No matter where you were or who you were with, you were always humble. No matter who you talked to, you never gave the impression that you were bigger than they were. I cherish the times we spent just sitting around and talking about nothing in particular. I just loved spending time with you. Now you are gone but I will cherish the times we spent together until we can meet again in heaven. Your body is gone but your spirit will be with me forever. I love and miss you so much and you will always be my brother, my hero, my friend. Bruce Lindon, Hazard, KY Jim was one of the greatest Basketball players I have ever seen play. I have watched High School and especially High School Tourney, played in Louisville and Lexington for the past 48 years. I watched the Hazard team play two games in the 1965 tourney. And saw two of the finest players to ever dribble a ball in Kentucky, Jim and Butch Beard. I am sure he was a very special and left a lasting impression with every one he came in contact with. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. God bless Jim's family and friends. John Sosh,Hardinsburg, KY We know him as James Lindon, in 2006 we got him as a patient. He battled to save his leg which eventually was amputated. He carried his grace during his extreme sickness. He was so humble that he never mentioned a word about his glorious past during the last 3 years that we knew him. We just knew by his demeanor that he was special. We can say with all our heart that he didn't just live like a Hero but fought with his illness with humility and grace and left us like a hero also. Dr Umar & Asma Murad (Chavies Clinic) To Sharon Lindon and family, 1 Cor.5-3 Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in the spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as I was present. Beverly Walton, Lexington, KY I went to high school with Jim who was well respected for his cool demeanor as well as his basketball success. After all these years I can vision and appreciate Jim's easy smile, his agility and that jump shot! My thoughts are with his family. Patty Cody, Lawrenceburg, Indiana Jim will surely be missed. He was like a brother to me because I spent so much time at him and Lovette's house. He loved to play Bid Wiz with my husband. Lovette always wanted the best for Jim and their family. Jacqueline R. Johnson, Louisville, KY I am really sorry for your loss, but remember that our loss is heavens gain. Angles will watch over your family in your time of need. Call me Sharon if you need to talk. Doris Combs, Hazard, KY I was a cheerleader at HHS when Jim played ball. He was a wonderful person both on and off the court. I am so glad I got to see him at our last '67 reunion. My condolences to all of Jim's family. Dawn Reynolds Farmer, Richmond, KY Jim will truly be missed. He was a big part of my childhood growing up. He was a wonderful brother-in-law, who would play spades, tonk, and bid wiz till the wee hours. He is also one of the reasons that I began playing basketball. He always was laid back with a great sense of humor. I will forever cherish memories of him, as well as the time spent with Gloria, Sharon and Bug (who always stayed up with me playing jacks). The entire family has my sympathy, and I only pray that as time goes on, the pain that you experience now, will be replaced with joyful, loving memories. Roxie Ann Keese, Louisville, KY Everyone in school knew the name Jim Rose and respected his amazing talent on the basketball court, even if we didn't know him personally. Jim's loss is profoundly sad for the people that loved him, but the loss of a gentleman of his caliber diminishes us all. Sharon Brashear I grew up in Bowling Green watching Jim play ball at Western. On the play ground I tried to play just like him. I ran with my thumbs upward and tried to pattern my jump shop after his. I never came close to being as good as Jim Rose, but then few guys did. What I will remember the most though is that he would take time to talk with me after a Western practice or before or after a game. Growing up in a home without a father, that meant more to me than anything. A few years later while attending the University of Louisville, I ran into Jim once on the campus and once in town. He still took the time to talk with me and it still meant just as much. Reflecting back I now am even more thankful that I had an opportunity to know him because he cared enough to talk to me even when he was on top of the world from a basketball standpoint. I will keep you all in my prayers but I am grateful that I will always have the memories of those conversations with Jim in my heart. God bless you all. Rev. Calvin Stephen Vinson, Moore, SC To my big brother, I will miss you so much. It is so hard to not question why you had to leave us so soon, but we must say it was God's will. We will trust that God will give us strength to carry on until we meet on the other side. You called me on Mothers' Day. I called you on your birthday May 26. I will cherish those calls forever. I love you. Gloria (Rose Lindon) Cane Ridge, TN I was so very sorry to hear about Jim's death. Please know that I'm thinking of all of you and praying for you during this sad time. I went to high school with Jim and appreciated getting to help cheer him and the rest of the basketball team on to many victories. He was an outstanding player! May the presence of God be with you. Love you. Elder Janice Anderson, Lexington, KY Uncle Jim, he was a really cool uncle. He was really funny. He always used to talk to me about how he used to play basketball. I bragged about him a lot about how good he used to play basketball to all my friends. He always used to make me laugh. George Edward Olinger Jr. Robinson, Il The (Evelyn Combs) Poore Family sends our love. Jim was truly a "Kentucky Basket Ball Treasurer". More than that he leaves a legacy as a child of god, a loving father and dear, brother. The bible says in James 1:2 ...whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance...so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. Craig, Edna, Ramonia, Julia, Joyce, Anthony and Rachel, Dayton, Ohio Jim was a very good friend to me. He was the same good guy no matter how good he was in sports, not sure if he knew how good he really was at Hazard High. He was the best shot I had ever seen, and in football he could really throw that ball. He will be missed by all and I am so sorry for your loss. Frederick C. Ratliff, Hyden, KY May you accept this heartfelt note of sympathy during the passing of Jim. Know that your strength comes from the Lord in times like these. Paulette Combs Roberts, Columbus, IN Jim was a beloved brother-in-law; and I have many fond memories of him that will last for all time. Flourney Robinson, Jr., Louisville, KY Jim was a wonderful brother-in-law. I have fond childhood memories of him, and the classic "head-thump" he would give my younger sister and I as a greeting. Pastor James Smith, Lexington, KY Sending our Love and condolence from Washington, DC wish we could be there. Love you your cousins, Monica Lee, Kenny, Anthony, Jarvis and Julie. Monica Lee Walker, Temple Hills, MD I didn't know much about basketball until I saw Jim play. He brought so much joy to my family as they all sat together around the television in hopes of seeing James play. I'd rather have been watching cartoons or something but my special cousin was on television and that meant the world to my mom, sisters & brother. Jim's kindness was always felt when I came around. He will truly be missed. His spirit remains here on earth with all of us because we need his courage to carry on, but his borrowed body goes back home to God. We love you all!
