Mystery Person #49

Congratulations to Carol E. Williams in Perry, the first to identify Mystery Person #49 as C. M. Gilmore.  Carlene Shackelford of Hazard also identified him.  Gilmore came to Hazard in 1912 after graduating from Eastern State Teacher's College in Richmond.  He was a member of the faculty at Hazard High School and was known as "professor."   He taught in the city schools until 1930 when he became  principal of Hardburly High School.  At one time he was Editor of the Hazard Herald Newspaper.  In 1938, after a day of teaching, Gilmore started suffering chest pains.  The following day, his brother, Dr. H. S. Gilmore, was called at his home in Owensville, Kentucky.  The doctor picked up the professor in Hazard and drove him to his home in Bath County so C. M. could rest.  His condition was not thought to be serious until he became weaker after the trip.  He had suffered a heart attack. The following day he was dead at the age of 51.  We'd like to know how Carol E. Williams solved the mystery.  Contact us

I REALLY think that I have it this time!  It is Charles M. Gilmore.  He was superintendent of the Hardburly grade and high school at the time of his death.  He had been a member of the Hazard High School faculty for 12 years prior to that.  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

Just a wild guess:  C.M. Gilmore.   Carlene Shackelford, Hazard, KY

Still researching this one.  I found a reprint dated 1920 about Hazard and it names the Editor of the Hazard Herald as John B. Norton.  Well I just made a stab and then I ran across another old Editor of The Hazard Herald, a Mr. Trosper, and I think this was around 1913 or thereabouts.  It was through my researching the No. 49 that led me to the Hardburly 1930 census records and there I found only two teachers listed, one a woman, and then John D. Adams.  I had completely forgotten about this man but somewhere in my mind I remember reading more about him.  I saw where someone had jotted a guess, Henry Clay Robertson.  I remember him and he had the look of a professor but I thought he taught at Combs High School.  Thanks again for I had a pleasant evening and would not have done so had I not been trying to solve old # 49.  IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC

I remember hearing about a teacher by the name of Coleman at Hardburly, but I can't remember if it was a man, or a woman.   Lyndon Combs, Hazard, KY

I am guessing Mr. Collins who Collins Field was named after. Sorry I cannot think of his first name, but seems like he was nicknamed "Pop"  Vivian Benton, Stonewood WV

Could this be  G. W. Lewellyn or Pete Williams?  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

'Tis another good one.  The only person I remember ever having that name was a great teacher at Liberty High School by the name of A. D. Puryear.  We all knew him as Prof. Puryear.  I racked by brain of teachers, old and new, but this one did not surface.  IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC

Mr. Spencer??  Lyndon Combs, Hazard, KY

My guess is J. Foley Snyder.  Jean Willoughby Moates, Americus, GA

Was it John Horton?  Missy in Hazard, KY

Could it be W. C. Eversole or W. C. Fugate?  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

Roy Eversole?  Sarah F Ritchie, Hazard, KY

John D. Bowling?  Lyndon Combs, Hazard, KY

Could this possibly be J. Dryden Colliver?  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

I will guess Charles Wooton.  He was an early editor of the Hazard Herald.  Carlene Shackelford, Hazard, KY

I am going to say that it was Bailey Wooton.  He was a teacher at one time and he was also the Editor of the Hazard Hearld at one time.  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

Oscar Combs? no wait a minute I am thinking of the man that owned the paper in the 20's...I'll get it....he owned it when it was still a family business and Norman worked as a reporter....I'll make a phone call and get back to ya.  Leah Stone, Hazard, KY

This wouldn't be Mr. Warren would it??  Lyndon Combs, Hazard, KY

Jesse Morgan.  Hazardgal, Hazard, KY

The names of Mr. and Mrs. Nolan came to my mind but I don't think Mr. Nolan was a teacher. Right off, I suppose I would have guessed M. C. Napier.  IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC

Here is my guess' John Stringer.  Patrick in Hazard, KY

Is it Mr. Robertson.  When I was in high school he used to sub sometimes and was elderly then.  Tammy Way, Lawrenceburg, KY
