Congratulations to Harold Lloyd Baker of Modesto, California, the first to correctly identify Mystery Person #55 as John Evans Bowling who was born and reared in the Lothair section of Hazard.  John was a member of the Lothair Baptist Church and served in the Army  Reserve for 13 years gaining the rank of Captain.  He was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis.  He had many interesting hobbies including bee keeping, knife collecting, and bird watching.  John played basketball at Hazard High School and attended Virginia Tech University on a basketball scholarship and later transferred to Eastern Kentucky University.  He went to work for Citizen's State Bank on Main Street in Hazard in 1960.  He then bought Smith Maytag Company on Main Street in Hazard.  In 1961 John Evans and his wife Margaret bought a tract of land called Mill Hollow adjoining the golf course property in Hazard.  It would one day be home to a business most of you identify John with.  In 1968, He bought Lee Cructhfield's Chevrolet Cadillac dealership in Hazard.  Bowling, along with M.K. Eblen and Kermit Caudill formed a corporation known as  Cardinal Chevrolet Cadillac located at the corner of Spring and Maple Streets in Hazard.  In 1969 the business burned.  Cardinal Chevrolet then moved into the old Gene Baker Motor Company building on East Main Street.  When new Highway 15 was built, Mill Hollow was filled creating a six acre lot.  As Cardinal Chevrolet grew, John Evans began envisioning a new building on the lot.  In 1982, he and his architect, Lester Roberts, began the plans for the new dealership at 101 Cardinal Drive.  Sadly, John did not live long enough to see his new business open on the new property.  He died of cancer on December 18th 1983.  Ground breaking ceremonies for the new building were held in May 1984.  His wife Margaret followed her husbands plans and the new Cardinal Chevrolet opened a short time later where it still operates today.

Lee Crutchfield

I think the person was John Bowling.  Harold Lloyd Baker, Modesto,Ca,

Could this be Dr. Rutledege?  I think he owned Smith Maytag when it was located by First Baptist.  Karen Parsons, Christopher, KY

Could it be Lee Crutchfield?  I think that building  behind what use to be the Huff-Begley Building (Hazard Clinic) was the business that burned.  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

Congratulations to Harold Lloyd Baker of Modesto, California, the first to correctly identify Mystery Person #55.  George Pendleton in Houston, Texas, Eddie Dawhare and Carlene Shackelford of Hazard also came up with the correct answer.

Is it Herman Maggard?  Gary in Hazard

Sounds like John Evans Bowling, Carlene Shackelford, Hazard, KY

Could it be Bill Douglas?  (I think that we did him once before this though).  Then there was Mr. Gordon (Paul's dad that lived on Maple street in the 1960s).

Is it Hugh Dunbar?  Carol E. Williams in Perry County

Zeke Smith owned Smith Maytag at one time, could it be Zeke Smith?  Carol E. Williams in Perry County

I remember when Zeke Smith owned Maytag and they lived atop the store.  I was a friend of his daughter, Freida and later got to know Darwin, his son, when they opened up Maytag in the town of Whitesburg.  I am at a loss and can't wait to see who this feller is.   Idalee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC.

I know this may be a little far fetched, since he may not be this old.  Is it possible that it could be Bob Hammonds?  I know his parents Charlie and Bonnie lived in Lothair and that Bob did work for Citizens Bank at one time.  Also, I think there was two different times on
the Berlin cold war; one being 1946-1949 and then I think another one was in 1961.  Carol E. Williams in Perry County.

I thank you so much for the opportunity to play this kind of trivia and be a part of the continued history of Hazard and Perry County.  You're the best and very special to this old gal down here in SC.  The pic on this page shows Citizens Bank.  The door to the right is the door I opened so many times.  It led to the law offices of Grover Wilson and Sam Ward, two of my all time favorite people.  The mold was broken when both of these entered the world.  Idalee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC.

I feel that it must be M. H. Alcorn. Carol E. Williams in Perry County

Is it Harmon Petrey?  Please hurry and tell us who it is.  Asicit in Hazard, KY

I noticed that Harold Lloyd Baker was the first to identify this mystery. I am going to make a stab at it also and guess it to be Barney Baker.  I think I do remember his working at Peoples Bank.  Carol E. Williams in Perry County

Could you be talking about R G Eversole?  Shirley Wallick in Arizona

Congratulations Harold Baker. Didn't take him long to figure it out.  buddy716

Could it have been Joe Pat Gorman?   Carol E. Williams in Perry County

Could it be L.D. Gorman or, perhaps Jack Duff?  Would it be Joe Eversole?  Did he work there before or at the same time as he worked at First Federal Savings and Loan?   Carol E. Williams in Perry County
