Hazard developer and wife found shot to death

Prominent Perry County developer Roy Campbell, 81, and his wife, Wanda, 79, were found dead in their home on Friday night.

Kentucky State Police said the couple died of apparent gunshot wounds but declined to release when they believe the pair were killed according to the Lexington Herald.

Family members alerted authorities when they couldn’t reach the Campbells at their secluded home surrounded by trees on Crawford Lane in Brownsfork.  Perry County sheriff’s deputies called in state police about 8:55 p.m. after the bodies were found.

The investigation is being treated as a homicide, according to state police. The bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsies.  No arrests have been made at this time.

Roy Campbell, a former coal operator, was a familiar name in East Kentucky, as he donated land for the Hazard Hospital, the Eastern Kentucky Veteran's Center, and the National Guard Armory.  He developed the Hazard Village Shopping Center, countless churches, restaurants and residential areas in Hazard.  Campbell, a wealthy businessman also developed property at Wal-Mart in Hazard.
