Bob Byrge of Hazard was the first person to correctly identify the latest Mystery Person.  Roscoe and Carlene Shackelford of Hazard and Connie Deborde of Jeff also came up with the correct answer.

Mystery Person # 6   M. K. "Blondie" Eblen was born in Henderson, Kentucky.  He attended school at Henderson High School where he played football and was Captain of his team and Class President of his Senior year.  He entered the University of Kentucky, determined to follow in his father's footsteps, but after several terms at the Agriculture College, he became more interested in the textbooks of his roommate who was a law school student.  Eblen decided that he was meant to be a lawyer, too.  While at U.K., he played on the Freshman Football team, and roomed on Limestone Street with Earl Clements, who later would become Governor of Kentucky and a prominent Senator in Washington.  Eblen was not only President of his Senior Class, but he was also the first President of the Student Government Association at the University.

Eblen graduated from U.K., his friend, Judge Roy Helm, prevailed upon him to come to Hazard and join in the Law Offices of Helm and Napier.  He worked with Judge Helm and Calloway Napier for 10 years.  Later, he and Judge Helm formed their own office.  They remained associated until Helm went to the Court of Appeals.  

In 1944, Eblen had a decision to make; he either had to close his many business activities or drop his active law practice.  He decided to continue his business activities, and retire from the active practice of law.  His many business activities consisted of coal mines, real estate and timber lands.  His coal mining interests included the Hazard Mining Company, City Fuel Company, and Katy Coal Company.  

He was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party, serving the local organization as County Chairman for over 10 years and served as Hazard Mayor from 1934 - 35, and 1950-53.
