Person # 8 E. P.
"Zeke" Smith
was born and raised at Ary, Kentucky in Perry County. His family was
among the original settlers in the area. When he completed his
education at Ary, he joined the Kentucky and West Virginia Power
Company. He was employed by the Kentucky River Power Company in
Hazard to work with the line crews that were helping to bring power lines
to Perry County. He served with them for over a year and a half
until he joined the Army in 1917. After his military service, Zeke
took up the carpenter's trade, and went to work for the Carrs Fork Coal
Company where he remained for three years. He returned to Hazard to
enter the home building business. Although he was very successful in
this venture, he was offered a job at the Kentucky Block Coal Company,
where he remained for 7 years. After that, he worked as a rigger and
millwright for the American Roller Mills in Ohio. It was about this
time that he was approached about taking the Maytag Washing Machine Agency
in Hazard. He opened the business in January 1932 in the spot that
would later be home to Bullard Home & Office Supply Company on High
Street. Smith received his dealer franchise on
February 19th 1932, which happen to fall on his birthday. Later on,
he expanded into the Maytag Refrigerator line. In 1942, after 12
years on High Street, he moved his business into a new building on Main
Street. Today that building is home to a bridal shop. Recent Mystery Men Joe Foley M. C. Napier Dudley Goodlette R. L. Collins John Gross Blondie Eblen Clymon Shelton Fred Combs Lus Oxley William Stanfill S. B. Snyder Carl Seale Nell Harper |
