Congratulations to Ida Lee Hansel & Roscoe & Carlene Shackelford for identifying Nell Johnson

Nell Tye Johnson Harper was born on August 9th 1893 in Whitley County.  She came to Hazard in 1922 where she was engaged to teach at the Hazard Baptist Institute.  For two years, she taught the sixth grade and High School Science.  Upon the insistence of her sister, Rachel Tye Baker, she left HBI and joined her in the Hazard Poultry and Supply Company.  In 1932, she left her sister's business and took over Dale's Grocery on Main Street in Hazard.  Johnson opened Johnson's Department Store in the same spot in 1934.  The Hazard High School band performed at the opening ceremonies.  Among the members of the band that day were Dick Goodlette and Sam Powell Jr.

Nell first met J. O. Harper when he came to Hazard in 1932.  He was a salesman with the Maury Coal Company and later worked for the Stratton and Terstagge Company.  They were married in 1938 and Mr. Harper joined Nell in the management of Johnson's Department Store.  Nell Harper died in 1982.
