Congratulations to Ida Lee Hansel - 1st to identify Mystery Person #19

Curt Feltner, the only son of Elijah and Martha Baker Feltner, was educated at the Lower Broadway School, Hazard Baptist Institute and Buckhorn High School.  While at Buckhorn, he became greatly interested in sports.  When interviewed by WSGS about sports, he remarked that in his day, basketball was strictly a girl's game.  Among his room-mates at Buckhorn were Dr. E. Begley and Joe Eversole.  Upon completing school at Buckhorn, he joined his father's business.  Curt's father was connected with the railroad for many years, and established a dry goods store at Avawam in 1916.  Three years later, Elijah Feltner moved to Butterfly, Kentucky and founded the M & C Feltner Store, named after his wife - Martha and his son - Curt.  In 1924, Curt Feltner married Cindy Drake of Wolfe County.  In 1928, Elijah Feltner realized that Hazard was a growing town so he bought property in Walkertown.  After working with his father for about ten years, Curt opened up his own grocery store, and later a retail department store in Hazard. He closed the grocery store around 1945.  He operated Feltner's Department Store in Walkertown.  He organized a general distribution company in connection with his already existing dry goods business.
