Congratulations to Mary Jo Gregory Edwards

Mary Jo Gregory Edwards in Carmel, Indiana was the first to identify Mystery Person #28 as Bess Draughn.  Bess was born on June 7th 1898 in Hazard, Kentucky.  She was the oldest of thirteen children.  She attended Hazard High School, Sue Bennett College in London, KY., and Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY.  On May 8th 1916, she married Tonie Zoellers, the owner and operator of one of the first movie theaters in Hazard.  To that union was born four children.  Zoellers died in London, Kentucky in the late 1920s.  Shortly after his death, Bess accepted a job as a teacher with the Perry County School System, first teaching at the Chestnut Point School in Maces Creek.  After being a widow for 28 years, Bess married Talmage Draughn.  Her son, C. A. Zoellers lived in Woodland Park and worked for the Kentucky Power Company in Hazard.  Bess Draughn died in January of 1975.

Olive Zoellers was married to Bess's son, C.A. Zoellers.  C. A. died during open heart surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.  This was in the days before they had perfected the surgery as it is done today. Shortly after that Olive moved to London, Kentucky where she lived and then went south.  I attended the Methodist Church with Olive and considered her one of my good friends.  Elizabeth Duncan, Hazard, KY
