Congratulations to Faye Eckles, Hardburly, KY., the first to identify Mystery Person #35

Virginia Cecil was a teacher in the Perry County and Hazard City Schools for many years.  She was born at Stearns, Ky., in McCreary County in 1909.  She was the daughter of Susie Finley Cecil and Mitchell Cecil.  Her family later moved to Middlesboro where she had her elementary education.  In 1925 her family moved to Perry County and they settled at Hardburly where she completed her high school education.  Her father was Safety Mine Inspector for the Hardy-Burlingham Mining Company.  She attended Lee's Jr. College, the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University where she received her A.B. degree.  With the help of her sister, Marie, and others she helped organized the Hardburly Community Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent.  During her 21 years in Hardburly, she taught in the Perry County School System. Cecil assisted Madeline Hays in setting up the Bobby Davis Library in Hazard.  She worked for the Hazard City Schools for many years teaching 4th grade students at Roy. G. Eversole.  Virginia Cecil died in 1986.  Ready for another Mystery Person?  Click here

My guess would be Virginia Cecil.  She had a sister named Marie and a brother named Finley.  Faye Eckles, Hardburly, KY

I had no idea I would know the Mystery Person but I remember these women very well.  They lived right out the street from me when I lived on Broadway and she taught one of my children in their early grades. IdaLee Hansel,  Spartanburg, SC

Ms. Cecil was very special person and teacher.  Mattie Goins, Hazard, KY

I will be anxiously awaiting the answer to this one.  I remember very few people from the Hardburly area.  George Birmingham lived in Hardburly that I went to school with.  That name Hardy-Burlington I have never heard of it but I suppose Mr. Hardy that lived on Oakhurst might have been the Hardy, huh?  Ida Lee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC

Maurine Castegnaro?  Megan Turner, Hazard, KY

I think it might be Gladys McAfee. I know she was very smart  Carlene Shackelford, Hazard, KY

I agree, Gladys was not only smart, she was a wonderful, caring person!  Sue Clay Britton, Dundee, MI
