Congratulations to Carlene Shackelford, the 1st to identify Mystery Person #37

Mystery Person #37 - John E. Wilson came to Hazard in 1913 from the University of Kentucky.  He left Hazard in 1916 to study law at the University of Chicago School of Law and became the first superintendent of the Hazard City Schools.  The lower Broadway School was built as the 1st high school during his administration.  Wilson enlisted in the U.S. Army where he became a Lieutenant and served for a time over seas during World War I.  After the war, he finished law school and was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1922.  Wilson returned to Hazard and practiced law until 1927.  He left Perry County and settled in Ashville, North Carolina where he was active in the law until his retirement in 1968.  John's brother, Grover Wilson, was well known attorney in Hazard.  John Wilson died in 1972.  Ready for a new mystery?  click here

My father bought the home we now live in on Oakhurst from R.T. Whittinghill in the 40's.  He was the superintendent of the Hazard City Schools at that time. Elizabeth S. Duncan, Hazard, KY

Just came on site to see if the Mystery Person has been guessed and discovered.  As far as I can go back is R. T. Whittinghill but I know this is not the answer.  I saw a picture of 1928 and the teachers were listed but not the Super.  I saw J. Foley Snyder as the Principal.  I live 45 minutes away from
Asheville and never had a clue that one of our home attorneys lived and retired there.  IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg SC
